Meet the supplier: John Street Beverage

11th April 2020

John Street Beverage first began in 1979, when John Street, an engineer at the time was waiting for a meeting and was offered a cup of filtered coffee.  It was unusual at the time for offices to have filter coffee machines, and at this moment a passion was born.

The first company to not only sell coffee, but to loan equipment free of charge, John Street Beverage went from operating out of the front room, to becoming an established and (still) family run business with a real passion for great tasting coffee and customer relationships.  They have been working with us at Young’s for nearly 23 years, and you’ll find their Street & Co 100% Arabica blend coffee in our pubs for you to try next time you visit!

Their beans are a blend of 100% Arabica Coffee from Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Brazil.  This creates a medium-bodied coffee, developed with today’s taste palettes in mind – resulting in a rich toffee sweetness, honeyed notes and a soft citrus finish.

Earlier this year, members from our pub teams went with them to Costa Rica to see exactly where the coffee served in our pubs comes from.  They enjoyed an enriching experience meeting and helping the farmers & pickers, who work hard to produce such  delicious coffee beans we are able to enjoy here in the UK.

Sustainability is core to everything John Street Beverage do, and they are proud to hold certification from The Rainforest Alliance.  In order to become certified, farms and businesses must meet a comprehensive criteria based the following principles:

  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Improving livelihoods and human well-being
  • Natural resource conservation
  • Effective planning and farm management systems

Managing Director of John Street Beverage, Stephen Street, states that working with co-operatives in South America is of the utmost importance to the company, “we want to support families and communities, whilst protecting the land.  We have to protect the environment and adapt as it changes year to year, decade on decade.”

So next time you’re in one of our pubs, enjoying your daily coffee, take a moment to revel in the fact that you’re helping support socially and environmentally sustainable farming.
