BEING SPONTANEOUS……REMEMBER THAT?

1st July 2021

Guest blog written by Amber Staynings, CEO and Founder, Bums on Seats

Remember pre Covid and all those different elements that used to encompass our ‘normal’ life? Truly missed by us humans? Like all of us, I remember the spontaneity of a peaceful hour at a local coffee shop, sipping a frothy and delicious Cappuccino whilst reading my latest book (only just that second purchased from Waterstones and still with that distinctive new book smell). Or how wonderful it was to grab last minute tickets to a gig and frantically WhatsApp my friends to announce my success and ask who was free to join me in that spontaneous gesture of fun and friendship! But mainly – and regularly – let’s not forget (as if) the many times I used to grab a colleague or friend and dash to the pub after a busy day – come rain or shine – to share a bottle of wine or alcohol-free beer. OH! Those early evening drinks or (sometimes very late) suppers to wind away those midweek hours in my most natural habitat and much-loved environment – the great British Pub!

What do all of these small but normal life moments have in common? What is creeping around the distant corner of my mind beckoning me to be brave, enticing me to move forward into a world I used to so love and enjoy, a world of glorious and marvellous spontaneity!

Yes! Dear friends and fellow lovers of the Pub. We have all formed many new habits in the last 15 months and nearly all of our spontaneous decision making has been stripped away. We are now used to ordering take-away’s twice a week, and pre-booking months in advance for our drinking and dining experience, but I implore you to be brave because it doesn’t always need to be this way!

We need spontaneity. We are not meant to be this organised. We are meant to live with a little positive chaos in our lives, and surely one of the most rewarding aspects of being alive in our glorious UK is the ability to make immediate on the spot decisions and explore where that takes us, and who we meet, and what we experience.  I did not know that I was to end up running my own business without that random trip to the pub one evening accompanied by a glass of wine, beer mat, and pen – then suddenly fast-forward 6-months: I am the CEO of my own hospitality Company! How did that happen? Answer: sometimes incredible things happen when we don’t always plan but act spontaneously!

Reader I urge you. Let’s say yes again to just walking into a pub. Say yes! To grabbing your friend or work colleague, cousin, brother, sister, uncle, parent, or grandparent, and selecting a Young’s Pub location and just turning up with no more expectation than the need for guaranteed seating.  And yes- Young’s pubs are saving spontaneous seats for you.  Here you can enjoy a crisp glass of vino or cold beer with hours of spontaneity ahead of you. Who knows where you will be sat? Who knows who you will meet? And who knows what great ideas you may have?

It all starts with that spontaneous pub visit!

Exciting!
