St. George’s Day: 9 facts you didn’t know

16th April 2021

With the story that made him famous being as iconic as his white and red flag, a picture of a heroic knight bravely slaying a ferocious dragon is conjured when thinking of St. George. However, like many historic figures, much of his life remains shrouded in mystery.  At Young’s, every year on St. George’s Day we like to raise a toast, and with St. George’s Day around the corner, on April 23rd, we thought we’d share some interesting and little known facts about England’s famous patron saint.

Hint: the truth might not be what you think.

1. St. George wasn’t actually English, he was born in Cappadocia, part of modern day Turkey and now associated with it’s hot air balloon season!

2. St. George never actually set foot on English soil.  Mind = blown.

3. The country of Georgia is named after St. George.

4. St. George is also the Patron Saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal and Russia – wow we have a popular guy!

5. The dragon was actually added into the story in a book called Golden Legend, published in the 13th century.

6. The English flag comes from St. George’s Cross, which also features on the Union Jack flag of the UK.

7. St. George was a Roman soldier, not actually a knight!

8. Like many saints, St. George was a martyr – executed for refusing to give up Christianity.

9. King Henry V was especially devoted to St. George, and claims the Battle of Agincourt was won by the English because a apparition St. George came to him during battle!

Exciting!
