2023 The Year of Rugby

Danny Brown

31st July 2023

Like all good things in life, it started in the pub. After a few phone calls, endless rugby chat, and an Asahi or two (for research purposes of course) The Rugby Love was born.

This year the sport celebrates 200 years on the pitch and with 2023 welcoming the Guiness Six Nations, Summer Internationals and the Rugby World Cup it seemed the rugby gods had aligned (we’re not talking Jonny Wilkinson) in delivering the pitch-perfect backdrop.

From the after-work chats and half-time-lunchtime-catch-ups one thing had become apparent, rugby was more than a game.

Rugby is a shared value.

It brings communities together.

On the pitch, in stadiums, at home, or in the pub, (of course, we recommend a Young’s one for the latter option) and this year we decided to celebrate by partnering with the children’s rugby Charity, Wooden Spoon.

Pledging to raise 150k through fundraising, we no doubt have an inspirational year ahead. Funds will be supporting various initiatives, including Wheel Chair Rugby charities, Dogs for Good,  Maddys Mark, established to promote positive mental health and well-being in young women. Food bank and community scheme iniative Pass The Plate, and School of Hard Knocks who use sports and other activities to help participants re-engage with school or find employment.

Sound like a great cause? Well, the good news is you can help and it’s as simple as going to the pub. Yes, you heard that right. From the end of August, you’ll be able to buy our limited edition Drop Gold ale (recommended pairing, any World Cup game) with 20p from every pint going to Wooden Spoon.  So what are you waiting for? Book your turf, get the beers in and who knows you may even bump into a player or two…
