Women’s Euro 2025: a nation watching

There’s going to be a lot of football to watch with the Women’s Euro this Summer. But for me it’s all about Group D where England reside. I’ve been lucky in that a lot of my friends have been drawn in the same group. So there’s no better way to watch them than pulling up in a pub garden and watching the action unfold.

I played for England myself throughout the youth levels, but these days I can enjoy the downtime on international breaks and tournaments and take up the role of supporter along with the rest of the country.

I’ve crossed paths with a few of the players who have made it to the senior team which is exciting in itself. I wish them all the best of luck this summer ahead of the tournament and I can’t wait to watch the action in the pub with a beverage.

England

Player to watch – Michelle Agyemang

This will be her first senior tournament at just 19. She secured her spot after scoring an absolute worldie on her senior debut after being on the pitch for just 41 seconds. The Arsenal striker has been on loan to Brighton all of last season so hopefully her shooting boots are raring to go. We’ll need all the goals we can get to qualify out of this tricky group. I’m also excited to watch Lauren Hemp play too, she’s fun to watch for Man City and always a threat. She’s not long back from injury and I think she will be fresh and feeling good to go.

In terms of young talent, Maya Le Tissier and Grace Clinton have both had great seasons at Man United this year and it’s been fun to training with them. I learn from them most days despite being at my mature fine wine age.  I also played with Lauren James at United when we first started out. What a player. She’s a top talent and is coming back from injury at the right time for England. Watch out for her individual flare.

France

Player to watch – Sakina Karchaoui

I played against her recently in the World Sevens (PSG) and she was an absolute baller. This will be England’s first game and it will be important to get points on the board early on.

Women's Euros

Netherlands

Player to watch- Chasity Grant

She’s fast and fun to watch in the WSL. She plays alongside my current team mate Dominique Janssen and one of my best friends Jackie Groenen. When you combine all their capabilities together, you’re in for an entertaining game!

Wales

Player to watch – Ceri Holland

What a game this is going to be against our neighbours. This is the final game of our group and could end up being a must win. Ceri is strong, solid and great in the air. I’m also excited to see if my footballing daughter Safia Middleton-Patel gets some game time between the sticks. She’s grown so much over the past few seasons and It’s her time to shine in the first major tournament that Wales have qualified for.

Half time entertainment

Get the beers in, my snacks of choice are crips and peanuts. Make sure you don’t lose your spot by the TV by settling down for a game of flip the beermat

Gather around 10/20 beer mats from the tables. This can be played solo or in a group.

Place one beer mat at the edge of the table, half hanging off. Place the tips of your fingers under the beer mat. The aim is to flick the mat upwards and catch it when the same hand mid air. If you catch it clean add another beer mat. Keep increasing to see who can flick the most.
