The concept of a family holiday can feel intimidating for some of us. Abandoning the safety of our homes to explore the unknown and not an electronic device in sight.

Swerving the queues at the airport in favour of a family-friendly holiday closer to home is not a compromise. Our great country has so much to offer and a pub staycation is all about relaxing. Zero pressure. No frills, pomp or circumstance. It’s all about revelling in the unique sensation of having absolutely nowhere to be. No timeframes or strict parameters, no rushing whatsoever. Even nap time can go frivolously out the window.

If the kids have taught us anything, it’s that mischief and adventure can be found anywhere – no need to dash off to expensive attractions or on transatlantic flights.

With a boutique hotel in the leafy suburbs as your base, such as The Park in Teddington, you’re in the heart of nature – with Bushy Park, Kew Gardens & Hampton Court Palace to entertain the family. The sights of the Big City are at your fingertips too, with just a 30 minute train journey. Let’s be honest – peering up at Big Ben, crossing Tower bridge or seeing where the Queen lives can feel monumental to children.

Beyond that, there are places in London which feel as though they transport you to
another time or place. A visit to Camden Market, Chinatown Gate or a stroll through the Natural History Museum can be transcendental. Diverse cuisine from all corners of the globe, quaint tea rooms, mysterious bookshops waiting to be explored and all without leaving the comfort of the UK. Incredible experiences for the little ones and many, many memories made.
Or if it all seems like too much effort, simply kick-back in the pub for a spot of dinner – naughty pudding treats for the kids – Malbec for you – and perhaps those electronic devices might make a brief comeback for an hour.
