On Saturday, March 30th, all-time rivals Oxford University and Cambridge University will once again go head-to-head in The Boat Race – but who will claim the 2024 bragging rights?

From the race’s starting point in Putney, to further along the Thames in Barnes and Hammersmith, the banks of the River Thames will be lined with thousands of eager supporters to watch each university battle from supremacy on the water. With so many points to watch the race from, we thought we’d help you decide where to park yourself up for the day, and provide our list of the best pubs along the Boat Race route.

Stop 1: Spotted Horse, Putney

Close to Putney Train Station, this pub is the perfect start to your day of Boat Race cheering. Whether you fancy a pre-race pint, relax on their rooftop terrace or want to go all out with a delicious brunch to set you up for the day, this High Street pub is the one for you!

Stop 2: Coat and Badge, Putney

The next stop on the route, the large and colourful garden area of this pub makes it perfect for a sunny March pint or spritz pitstop. The large laurel hedge envelopes the garden in a sense of calm, giving customers a rare spot of privacy in Putney on race day.

Stop 3: Boathouse, Putney

Famous as being the best restaurant and bar on the waterfront, The Boathouse proudly overlooks Putney Bridge, the starting point of the race. With a large upstairs deck boasting impressive views down the river, there isn’t a better location for getting the best view of the race route!

Stop 4: Duke’s Head, Putney

Next on the route is the arguably Putney’s most famous pub, a grand Victorian Grade II listed building which has watched over the River Thames in Putney for over 150 years. With a buzzing race day atmosphere, it’ll be hard to beat the party mood at this pub.

Stop 5: Half Moon, Putney

A short walk along the river and you’ll find yourself at the pub which has earned a name for itself as the most famous live music venue in South-West London. Hosting a fantastic party in honor of the Boat Race, it’ll be hard to find a better family friendly pub along the river.

Stop 6: Old Ship, Hammersmith

After you’ve explored all that’s going on in Putney, cross the river to bustling Hammersmith so soak up a slightly different vibe. The glass front of this fantastic West London pub means that whatever the weather, you’ll be able to see all the action on the river. Stop 7: Bull’s Head, Barnes

Known for it’s live jazz evenings, this Barnes pub does not disappoint on race day. With an all-day dance floor and sizzling Burger Shack in the courtyard, you and your four-legged friend will find yourself in a South-West London oasis!

Stop 8: Coach and Horses, Barnes

Minutes up the road is the next stop, with a large beer garden full of quirky garden huts, and a stylish interior it’ll be hard to beat having a pint in this pub. Stop 9: White Hart, Barnes

Famous for having some of London’s best sunsets, the final stop along the Boat Race route couldn’t be more perfect.
