How to Survive Your Office Christmas Party This Year

As the festive season approaches, so too does the work Christmas party. Now, this annual office jolly is meant to be fun, but in reality, there are a slew of anxiety-inducing scenarios that could well play out. We are, after all, boozing with people we share little in common with outside the workplace, and things said and done can be the subject of office gossip well into the new year.
But fear not! You can navigate the dreaded work bash like a pro with our essential office Christmas party survival guide, featuring all the do’s and don’ts for a successful holiday season. Here’s the etiquette you need to know, including what to wear, how to handle awkward conversations and, most importantly, how to leave gracefully.
Office Christmas Party Dos and Don’ts
While we’d all much rather be partying with our actual friends, attending the office Christmas party offers career opportunities, from strengthening bonds to networking with folk outside your immediate team. There’s no need to stay until the end – just making an appearance can be worth it. Plan on staying an hour or two at first and see how you go.
Check the invitation for the dress code, then ask around to get a general consensus on what the rest of the office is wearing. You don’t want to be the odd one out in a Christmas jumper if everyone else has opted for party dresses. Another important consideration is the Secret Santa, which you mustn’t forget. Follow the budget and guidelines. When in doubt, a bottle of bubbles or a sweet treat never raises complaints.
The words ‘open bar’ can turn the best of us into animals, and that’s fine at (some) weddings, but definitely not in a professional environment. Remember, quality over quantity. Select some tasteful pours, and if you find you’re getting tipsy, make the next one a non alcoholic cocktail. You’ll be able to better focus on conversation and turn on the charm when you’re not slurring your words or worried about being sick.
A little project chat is fine, but after a few minutes, put the spreadsheets and deadlines to one side and actually get to know your colleagues. You might discover that Rhianna from finance is just as obsessed with Love Island as you are, or that you and Grace from HR share a passion for rescuing dogs – potentially the perfect cause for a company volunteer day. Who knows? This festive bonding could even turn your office acquaintances into actual friends.
Your boss may be holding a prosecco, but they’re still your boss. The office party is no time to critique their leadership style or rant about your salary. Nor is it a time to overshare, particularly if you’re not close. They say people’s favourite topic of conversation is themselves, so focus on being a good listener. Your colleagues will love the chat, and in turn, love you!
Office romances do happen, but if you’re planning on starting one, it’s probably not a good idea to do so in front of the entire workplace. And contrary to what too much booze may have you thinking, mistletoe does not equal consent. Keep your hands and your lips to yourself, and save the move-making for another occasion. Perhaps your leaving do.
Most of us learned this golden rule back at university, but still, an alarming amount of work Christmas party disasters begin with drinking on an empty stomach. Factor in dinner with your office bestie before the party kicks off, unless there’s food served at the venue, in which case you must remember to eat. This will help you keep going for longer and avoid getting too hammered while the night is young.
Pull your cameras out at the beginning, when you’re all looking and feeling your best, and if someone still wants ‘fun group photos’ at the end of the night, be sweet and suggest taking it for them instead.
When your social battery has run low, it’s time to leave. Nothing good ever happens if you’re the last one standing. Think up a suitable excuse before the event, such as a waiting cab or a sunrise yoga appointment, and exit while everyone still has a positive opinion of you. If you can walk back in on Monday morning without dread, you’ve survived the office Christmas party. Well done!
