TOP TIPS FOR CREATING A HOME OFFICE

At Young’s we try to make working from our pubs as comfortable and inspiring as working from your own office. In the current social climate, many of us are finding themselves working in a new, make-shift ‘home office’.  For some that means the cluttered kitchen table, for others that may mean working from a spare-room-come-study, but for nearly all of us, it means working from a space that we don’t usually associate with work.

We’ve compiled our top tips for creating a productive working space at home, using elements we have tried and tested when designing the third space working areas in our pubs.

1. FOLLOW ERGONOMIC RULES

To maximise productivity and encourage good posture, your computer screen should be at eye level and your keyboard should be positioned with enough space so your forearms are parallel to the floor. Use a comfortable chair that you enjoy sitting on, that way you’ll actually want to sit at your desk!

2. EMBRACE NATURAL LIGHT

It’s easy to recreate a 90s corporate cubicle in your home by pushing your desk in a corner in an attempt to save space. To ensure you get the best out of your working day, try to have your desk as close to a window as possible, flooding your work area with natural light.  Natural light has many health and happiness benefits, plus windows are a great way to increase creativity and allow you to switch off from work for a few minutes throughout the day.

3. TRY TO SEPARATE ‘WORK LIFE’ AND ‘HOME LIFE’

The best way to get the most out of your working day, whilst being at home is to create a clear distinction between home and work life.  Having a space your mind associates with being ‘an office’ will not only give you some privacy, but will ensure you aren’t distracted throughout the day.  There’s nothing less productive than having the TV blaring in the background, or being tempted by the pile of books next to your work station.

4. CREATE SOME COMFY SPACE

At Young’s we make certain that only the comfiest of chairs and sofas are in our pubs, giving people a place to work in comfort.  It shouldn’t be any different at home! A great home office includes a nice comfy chair, for sitting to think or read any long documents in. Customise with nice throws and pillows, and you’ll be looking for an excuse to sit and read hefty files.

5. ADD GREENERY

It’s scientifically proven that plants make people happier, and not only do most of our pubs have lovely gardens, but we also like to bring some of the greenery inside too.  Plants are also fantastic at removing harmful pollutants from the air, and stabilizing humidity levels, giving you the perfect working environment!

6. PERSONALIZE THOUGHTFULLY

Everyone loves having knick knacks in their home that spur creativity, remind them of loved ones, or simply just make them feel happy!  Your desk should be no different. Interesting and personal objects stimulate thought processes and mindfulness, and can act as inspiration for success. However if kept in the same place for long periods of time they cease to be as effective, so remember to rotate them around often!

Exciting!
