Beyond the stigma

This month we’re celebrating World Mental health day and throwing back to our inspirational talk at Young’s HQ with Neil Laybourn from Beyond Stigma . Talking about mental health in the workplace can be a difficult subject for some, but with mental health charity Mind reporting that one in six people will experience mental health problems at the work ,there’s never been a better time to bring it to the table. Working with some inspiring industry professionals this year, we’ve put together our top tips for looking after yourself at work.

  1. Reclaim your lunch break.  We’ve all had lunch at the desk, in fact, almost one third of UK workers do not take proper lunch breaks. Leaving the office will not only help to clear your head and make for a more productive afternoon, it will also avoid you getting crumbs in your keyboard and an unwanted trip to the IT department.

3. Healthy body, healthy mind. A lunchtime stroll in the park, cycling to work or even just walking to someone’s desk rather than sending an email can all help with an increased sense of well being (and keeping your colleagues inbox down). Staying active increases the chemicals in the brain that helps regulate our moods and can assist with tiredness, anxiety and stress. 

Make a connection. Social relationships are a great way to help improve your mood and buffer against mental health issues. Take time to make a connection,  speak to someone you haven’t spoken to in the office and really listen to them. You never know, you may be speaking to your new best friend or the love of your life by the office photocopier.

As awareness around mental health increases we’re working hard to break the stigma and are extremely proud to share that in the last 12 months, we have trained over 50 Mental Health First Aiders and Mental Health First Aid Champions across all parts of our business.
